How is the Digital Reef funded?

The Digital Reef emerged from a passion project. It began as a model for indicating place meaning in an evidence-based, accessible, and visual manner. Frustrated with the lack of ‘user data’ available when place-based narratives around recreation and other well-being projects have at once – decried the data gap and simultaneously doing nothing about it. The realization that structural behavioural data can inform place meaning narratives far greater than statistics of use could ever hope to achieve.

As of now the Digital Reef is funded at a minimal level by Dr Galloway. The decision was taken in November 2025 that the most suitable long term structure to house the DR would be a Charitable Trust. Beginning as we mean to continue, a trust deed was commissioned and under the guidance of Derek and Peter Wilson our application was submitted to the Charities Register at the end of 2025. We currently await a decision – expected by May 2026.

Overtime, the DR will be able to provide affordable, accessible data products to the people and communities of Aotearoa. Our subscription structure provides a wealth of capability for well-being groups, while powering the Digital Reef.

As the authoritative overlay for structural social behaviour in Aotearoa, local and central governance is informed and enhanced through licensed access to the Digital Reef

Social Capital Invested - Efficient, Effective Decisions-making Realized

The addition of the Digital Reef as an overlay for District Plans and other GIS-based decision-making platforms will save millions a year in hassles avoided and enhanced management of well-being places.

Social Purpose Funding

The Digital Reef will apply for applicable funding through sources who align with the stated purposes of the Trust Deed.
